This World Day for Safety and Health at Work OSM commits to a safer workplace

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed annually on April 28th. The main objective of this day is to promote the prevention of accidents and illnesses at work. The day was first recognized in 2003, as an initiative of the International Labour Organisation to create awareness and promote a safe working environment. The theme for the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2023 is “A Safe and Healthy Working Environment: A Fundamental Principle and Right at Work,” highlights the need to prioritise employee safety and health in every workplace.

According to the ILO, approximately 2.78 million workers die each year due to work-related accidents and illnesses. Hence, It is important to note that these accidents and illnesses are preventable if the right measures are taken. Markedly, this day aims to raise awareness among employers and employees on the importance of safety and health at work.

In the words of the former United States Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis,

“Every worker has the right to a safe working environment. It’s not a perk. It’s not a privilege. Its a basic human right.”
